Simpson Girls: Allison's Bio
Allison Taylor is one of Lisa's best friends. She was born on June 26. Lisa first met Allison in the hallway on the first day of school. During a lockdown drill, Lisa was pulled into Miss Hoover's class. After the lockdown took place, Lisa first saw Allison when she correctly answered a question. But Lisa never got a chance to interact with Allison until she defended her after she saw that she was being harassed by two bad girls in the hallway. She is described as smart, shy, naïve, and kind. She skipped a grade because she was too smart for the first grade, making her the youngest friend in Lisa's group. Allison always shows empathy for her friends and family around her even when it's not necessary. As sweet as this girl is, she faced very difficult obstacles at her old school. Before she attended Springfield Elementary School, Allison attended a different school in Springfield where she got dissed by some popular girls. The particular group of girls didn't think that Allison was cool or pretty enough so they wanted nothing to do with her. Like Lisa, she was targeted for being an overachiever, thus making her feel bad about herself. She realized that in order to get through life she treats other people the way they want to be treated, whether if they deserve her daily act of friendliness or not.

Educators are some of the most important people in our lives, except our families. Like second parents to us, educators (most notably teachers) mold viewers' childhood. They often hold special positions in hearts, as much as they can also be a source of deep antagonism for students everywhere. Their power and authority imbues them with strength. Put it simply, they can make or break each student's educative career, and even their professional career.

With such a huge influence, it is no surprise that TV show creators are obsessed with educators. Teachers like Miss Honey in Matilda teach viewers what a good teacher should be. In television, however, the craziest characters get the most recognition. Consequently, the most memorable educators are often the most unconventional.
10 Principal Lewis (American Dad!)
The drug-smuggling, human-trafficking, drug-addicted principal of Pearl Bailey High School, Principal Lewis also forcibly drugs his students when he needs them to win championships. Likewise, he uses all sorts of drugs on school grounds. He swears excessively in front of his students, mocks them, and calls them names. In one episode, he pulls some of his students out of class to take them to an underground poker game so they can count cards for him. Later, the Chinese mafia would come after both Lewis and the high schoolers.
Principal Lewis's lifestyle does not fit that of an educator. It is not clear why or how he got the job.
9 Mr. Frond (Bob's Burgers)
Phillip Frond, known to students as Mr. Frond, is Louise Belchers' arch-nemesis and good, close friend. The sweater-wearing, always-knitting guidance counselor values the importance of feelings and emotions. He might like to think of himself as always being there to emotionally support the students of Wagstaff School, but he has shown time and time again that he is more concerned with winning recognition for his work as a guidance counselor.

He merely sees the children as tools for reaching his glory. Despite his badly-hidden vanity, Mr. Frond slightly cares about his students and cries when the Belcher kids write stories villainizing him as a nerdy spoilsport. Phillip is well-known for creating obnoxious slogans that he hopes would inform and educate children on emotional intelligence.
8 Principal Li (Daria)
Angela Li, the principal of Lawndale High School is most remembered for the manner in which she pronounced her school's name, drawing out the "Lawn" to emote school pride. However, like Mr. Frond, her students can see through the faux pride she professes for her school. Angela Li wants her school to be great, only so that she can be praised and glorified. She puts her students' needs last whenever doing so would make the school look good. Sometimes, this is to hilarious effect, such as when the school computers were stolen, and she announced a mandatory school-wide fingerprint collection for absolutely no reason.
In another episode, she suffers a mental breakdown when she enters into a contract with the soft drinks mafia to allegedly make more money for the school's betterment.
7 Principal Lawler (That's So Raven)
Principal Lawler (Wesley Mann) is the principal at Raven Baxter's high school, Bayside High. Mann appeared in many children's classic TV shows like Drake And Josh, Full House, and Even Stevens. He started out as an English teacher before becoming a principal. As the principal, he hates his job and punishes students for minor infractions, because he cannot be bothered to actually discipline and correct his students.

He is most noted for his distinctive manner of speaking in which he spits on his students when pronouncing the letter "P." He also has an unfortunate quirk of choosing a vocabulary heavy on the same letter. As a result, his students often end up soaked in saliva when he is near.
6 Ross Geller (Friends)
A certified paleontologist with a Ph.D., Ross Geller began his career working in a museum. Later, he moved to a teaching career. after he was offered the opportunity to work as a stand-in lecturer. Still, Dr. Geller is highly unprofessional and has no boundaries with his students. He dates one of his students, twenty-year-old Mona, for a few months. During that time, he impulsively follows her to Florida for spring break, because he is scared that she would cheat on him.

In another episode, he gives a student a passing grade after the student lies to Ross that he is in love with him and cannot concentrate in class as a result.
5 Peggy Hill
Peggy Hill is King of The Hill's funniest character. The narcissistic, egotistic, ignorant Spanish teacher, who can't speak Spanish, is another of many vain educators represented on screen. Peggy is so bad at speaking Spanish, that she accidentally kidnaps a Mexican child when she takes her students on a school trip to Mexico. Her lawyer is able to prove her innocence when he proves how badly Peggy understands Spanish. Winner of many Substitute Teacher of the Year Awards, Peggy is too deep in denial to actually spend her free time improving her Spanish.
In later seasons, Peggy pretends to be a nun to secure a teaching job vacancy at a Catholic school. This is but a blip in the many narcissistic schemes that Peggy would hatch to make herself look good.
4 Principal Skinner (The Simpsons)
Springfield's mama boys, and a strict believer in punishing his students disproportionately for their wrongdoings, Principal Seymour Skinner is Springfield Elementary's own biggest downfall. His enmity with Bart Simpson is legendary, as audiences watched principal and student learn to become good (but secret) friends. Skinner's story is even weirder because he is not Mrs. Skinner's son. Her son was killed in combat, and Seymour pretended to be her son on the day he arrived to deliver the news of her son's death. Both mother and son have been playing along with this charade ever since in a plot not too far off from Alfred Hitchcock's Pyscho.
3 Beth Baerly
Ms. Baerly is George Michael's teacher on Arrested Development. She is an attractive, young teacher, with whom all her male students, including George Michael, are in love with. After briefly dating her, Michael finds out that Ms. Baerly really does love Sadam Hussein, just as George Michael relayed to him earlier in the episode. Ms. Baerly is an average American teacher who has a deep love and passion for Sadam Hussein during the US's misguided war on terror.
What does she love about a power-hungry tyrant? The answer is chilling if pondered.
2 Miss. Simian
Lucy Simian, known as Miss Simian to her students, is Elmore Junior High School's most evil troublemaker. Over two million years old, Miss Simian is always irritated, much to the agony of her students. She is mean and grumpy, even to her boyfriend, Principal Brown, and has made enemies of nearly everyone in the school, particularly Gumball and Darwin. In one episode, she pretends to turn over a new leaf just so she can win the award for Best Teacher. She fools everyone and is voted Best Teacher, only to immediately revert back to her evils ways of throwing surprise quizzes and bullying her students once she wins.
Miss Simian is a reminder of every evil teacher that audiences have been forced to endure in their own childhoods.
1 Dean Pelton
Craig Pelton is one of TV's most memorable characters. A character who changes into over-the-top ridiculous outfits to greet his students every day, Dean Pelton makes no logical sense. One unanswered question remains where he finds the budget for all his elaborate costumes - some of which are not easy to find. Knowing how corruptible he is, it is fair to say, he probably uses the school's funds. When Craig is not changing into his costume of the day, he is stalking his most attractive student, Jeff; reading his confidential emails; touching him inappropriately, or moving right next to his house for optimal stalking.

Kipland Kinkel (1982-?)
Kipland Kinkel is a schizophrenic spree killer who murdered his parents before committing a school shooting at his former school on May 20, 1998. He killed 2 students and injured dozens more. This spree was considered the deadliest shooting at an American high school until the Columbine massacre the following year.
Kipland Kinkel was born on August 30, 1982 in Springfield, Oregon. His parents were William and Faith Kinkel, who were both Spanish teachers. His sister, Kristin, is six years older than him. When Kip was around 6 years old, the family took a sabbatical year in Spain, where he attended a non-English speaking school, where he failed to learn much because the teacher would only speak in Spanish. When the family returned to Springfield Kip began attending Walterville Elementary School but was made to repeat the first grade. In the second grade Kip was tested to see if he was eligible for any special education services, but got an average score on the neurological screening test. He was noted to have disadvantages in certain motor skills and spelling, and that his frustration and anxiety was particularly high. In the third grade, he continued struggling with writing and spelling but did very well in mathematics. Kinkel’s parents had him retested for special education and the 2nd time he qualified. By the end of the year Kinkel was performing extremely well academically, and was learning to control his frustration. In the fourth grade he was diagnosed as dyslexic. By the time he began middle school Kinkel began getting himself into trouble with authority. When he was in seventh grade Kinkel, along with some of his friends, purchased a copy of The Anarchist Cookbook (a bomb-making instructional manual) along with other similar titles. In the eighth grade, Kip was caught shoplifting CDs from a local Target and (although nobody knew at the time) bought a sawed-off shotgun from a friend which he hid in his bedroom.
On January 4, 1997, Kip and a friend went to a snowboarding clinic in Bend, Oregon, and whilst there they ended up being arrested for throwing rocks at cars driving down a highway, one of which struck a car. Both boys were charged and referred to the Department of Youth Service, where Bill and Faith were called to collect Kip. Because of this incident, Kinkel began visiting psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Hicks at his mother’s insistence. Hicks didn’t find any signs of a thought disorder or psychosis and diagnosed Kinkel with major depressive disorder. Hicks’ notes say that Kip became “tearful” when talking about his father, who he had a strained relationship with. On February 26, Kip and his parents visited psychologist Dr. John Crumbley, who believed Kinkel was remorseful about the rock-throwing incident and Kinkel ended up being sentenced to 32 hours of community service. Despite his visits with Dr. Hicks, which suggested that Kip was improving, he received a 2 day suspension on April 23 for assault a student that Kinkel claimed had shoved him. 6 days later, he was again suspended, this time for 3 days, after throwing a pencil at another student. On June 2, Dr. Hicks recommended that Kip began using Prozac (an antidepressant) and this seemed to work. On June 27, without the knowledge of his doctor, Kinkel managed to buy a 9m Glock 19 semiautomatic pistol. Bill Kinkel began letting the gun into the house in order to allow Kinkel to begin taking gun safety lessons. On July 30 his emotional growth meant he no longer needed counselling. During the summer Kinkel purchased a 2nd gun – a .22-caliber Ruger MK II semiautomatic pistol – from his friend and hid it from his parents. When the summer was over, he started at Thurston High School where he excelled academically and was invited to play on the freshman football team. On September 30, Kinkel’s father, Bill, purchased a .22-caliber Ruger 10/22 semiautomatic rifle for his son, as well as a hunting knife. At this stage, he had started hanging out with a tougher group of kids and also began playing with explosives, claiming this helped to vent out his anger.
During Kinkel’s time in high school, a series of school shootings occurred, starting with 16-year-old Luke Woodham. Oh October 1, he stabbed and bludgeoned his mother to death before using a Marlin Model 336 .30-30-caliber lever-action rifle to kill 2 students and injure 7 others at Pearl High School in Pearl, Mississippi before being apprehended and arrested. On December 1, in West Paducah, Kentucky, 14-year-old Michael Carneal began firing into a group of praying students at Heath High School, using a .22-caliber Ruger MK II semiautomatic pistol, killing 3 and injuring 5 before surrendering to authorities. On March 24, 1998, Westside Middle School students Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden set off the fire alarm to lure out the entire student body before opening fire on them with 2 semiautomatic rifles, a bolt-action rifle and 4 handguns. They killed 4 students and 1 teacher, injuring 9 other students and 1 other teacher. Both were arrested. Kinkel and a friend saw the news coverage of the massacre and both thought it was “pretty cool.” During May 1998 Kip and some friends toilet-papered a house using 400 rolls of toilet paper in an attempt to beat a school record. They accomplished the record but the group was caught.
On May 19, Kinkel arranged for the purchase of a stolen .32-caliber Beretta semiautomatic pistol from Korey Ewert. The day after that, on May 20, 1998, Kinkel arrived at Thurston High School at around 8am and bought Ewert’s gun for $110. He hid it in his locker. Sometime later, the owner of the Beretta, Scott Keeney, called the school to report his missing gun and to tell them that he believed one of the students, a friend of his son’s, had stolen it. At 9:15am, Kinkel confessed to having the gun to Detective Al Warthen who was at the school on other business. Kinkel and Ewert were arrested, both suspended from school pending expulsion. At 3pm Bill Kinkel arrived at the police station after being informed about Kip’s arrest and picked him up. At 3:30pm Kinkel grabbed the Ruger 10/22 rifle and shot s father in the back of the head, killing him, as Bill sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee. He dragged his father’s body into the bathroom and covered it with a sheet. Whilst waiting for his mother to come home, Kinkel told a few callers that his father was “unavailable.” At around 6:30pm Faith Kinkel arrived home and was walking up the garage steps when Kip told her he loved her before shooting her repeatedly with the Ruger rifle, killing her. He dragged her body across the garage and covered it with a sheet.
The next morning, on May 21, 1998, Kinkel left the house wearing a long trench coat that hid his 3 guns and the hunting knife taped to his leg. He was carrying almost 1,200 rounds of ammo in his backpack. He drove his mother’s car to school, parked on North 61st Street (2 blocks away from the school) and took a shortcut through a dirt path. At 7:55am he entered the school building, firing 2 shots in the hallway with his Ruger rifle. 2 students, Ben Walker and Ryan Atteberry, were hit and injured. Kip then ran into the school cafeteria, where around 200 students were sat, and fired the remaining 48 shots into the crowd. Mikael Nickolauson was killed and 22 others were injured, 2 of them critically. Kinkel aimed the rifle at student Michael Crowley and tried to shoot him but the rifle was empty. When he tried to switch magazines, 17-year-old student Jacob Ryker took the opportunity to tackle Kinkel to the ground. Jacob’s brother Joshua, brothers Doug and David Ure, Adam Walberger and at least 1 other student joined Jacob in trying to pin down Kinkel. As a result, Kinkel drew his 9mm Glock 19 and fired several shots. Jacob was hit and wounded and another student was injured before Kip was complete subdued. At 8:04am Officer Dan Bishop, first officer on scene, arrested Kinkel. At around 8:50am Kinkel was taken to the police station where he was locked in an interrogation room. He somehow managed to retrieve his hunting knife despite being handcuffed and when Detective Al Warthen came into the room Kinkel threatened him with the knife, charging at him. Warthen used pepper spray on him when he tried to slash his wrists with the knife while another detective took the knife away. At 9:30am 3 Lane County sheriffs arrived at Kinkel’s house and discovered the body of Faith and Bill. They also found 4 homemade bombs constructed with soda cans and a 5th bomb inside a fire extinguisher. After 15 nearby houses were evacuated, explosive devices were detonated on the Kinkel property and police found 2 stashes of inactive bombs, 1 in the crawlspace underneath the porch and the other in Kinkel’s bedroom. Also found was a hand grenade, casings to 2 howitzer shells, fireworks and unspecified chemicals.
On May 22, 1998, Kinkel was arraigned and was charged with 58 felony counts, including 4 counts of aggravated murder and 26 counts of attempted murder. During the arraignment, the defence used mental health experts to argue that Kinkel was mentally ill at the time of the shooting spree. Psychologist Dr. William H. Sack commented that the events would have been prevented if his mental troubles were recognised and treated earlier. Dr. Jeffrey Hicks, Kinkel’s previous psychiatrist, testified that Kip was in “satisfactory mental health” by the time he stopped going to therapy. On September 24, 1999, Kipland Kinkel pled guilty to all of the counts he was charged with and on November 11 was sentenced to 111 year in prison without the possibility of parole. During the hearing, Kinkel apologised for the killings. On June 19, 2007, almost a decade after the killings, Kinkel sought a new trial on the grounds that his lawyers didn’t take his case to trial, instead using the insanity defence. William Sack, now retired, and clinical psychologist Dr. Orin Bolstad, supported the claims, saying that Kinkel exhibited signs of paranoid schizophrenia, but had managed to hide them because he felt it was an abnormality and an obstacle to his social life. According to the doctors, he had experienced delusions and hallucinations, some of which included the Walt Disney Company trying to take control of America and the government implanting a computer chip into his brain. 2 months later, his request for a new trial was denied by a Marion County judge, but he appealed on the grounds that he had been given ineffective assistance in counselling during the original trial. On January 12, 2011, the Oregon Court of Appeals denied the appeal. Kinkel is currently incarcerated at the Oregon State Correctional Institution in Salem, Oregon, having been transferred there from the Oregon Youth Authority on June 11, 2007.

10 'ALONE AGAIN, NATURA-DIDDLY' - MAUDE'S DEATH
Throughout the course of The Simpsons there have been a number of deaths but none as enduringly sad as the passing of Maude Flanders. For starters, most of the other deaths on the show have been secondary characters, who have only appeared in an episode or two. What was so shocking about Maude's passing was that, despite being a secondary character, she had been a constant presence. What exacerbates the sadness of her death is the way Ned Flanders has to reconcile with his faith in the face of tragedy. On a show with little to no stakes, when everything returns to normal at the start of each episode, Maude's death felt like a permanent loss.
9 'MARGE BE NOT PROUD' - BART'S CHRISTMAS PRESENT
In this Christmas-themed episode Bart is in trouble for shoplifting, ruining yet another family portrait. Marge is not angry, she's disappointed, and for the viewer this disappointment is palpable. It's easy to empathize with Marge. However, the heartbreaking moment comes when Bart tries to make good. When Marge accuses him of stealing yet again he produces a photo of himself that he's had taken as Marge's Christmas present. She is truly touched and their relationship is reconciled. It's a heartwarming moment between mother and son and one that had viewers reaching for the tissues.
8 'THE SQUIRT AND THE WHALE' - LISA'S WHALE FRIEND
One of the more recent entries on this list, Lisa's friendship with a beached whale was a return to form for the show. After 30 years of storytelling, The Simpsons can be forgiven for not reaching the dramatic heights of its early years. However, in this episode when Lisa befriends a whale, washed up on the beach and unable to return to the water, the show reached the emotionally charged levels of some of its earlier seasons.

Lisa rallies the town to save the whale and when nothing is to be done she waits with her friend, who she has named Bluella, reading to her and sleeping next to her until sadly the whale dies. It's a heart-crushing moment and a brutal lesson about the laws of nature.
7 'LISA'S SUBSTITUTE' - LISA'S RECEIVES A NOTE
Lisa has always been the most intelligent and sensitive of the Simpson clan. These attributes sometimes ostracise her from the group and make her feel like an outsider. When a substitute teacher arrives at Springfield Elementary and seems to fill the void in Lisa's life, she begins to feel validated in a way she's never experienced before. The heartbreak comes when her substitute's time at the school is up and he has to move on. Lisa is distraught but the substitute leaves her a note, which simply reads: 'You are Lisa Simpson.' The sentiment giving her hope and strength for the future.
6 'LISA'S FIRST WORD' - MAGGIE SPEAKS
This is probably one of the most adorable episodes of The Simpsons as we not only discover Lisa's first word, we witness a normally silent character utter her first words as well, with heartbreaking sentimentality. In the episode, we learn that despite their antagonistic relationship, Bart and Lisa have a familial bond that runs even deeper. Bart, use to being an only child, hated Lisa for being born and was ready to run away, he stopped when he heard Lisa's first word 'Bart.' The episode is capped off when Homer puts Maggie to bed, telling her he doesn't mind if she never says a word. When he shuts the door, the usually silent Maggie takes out her dummy and says 'Daddy.' It's a one-two punch of heartbreak.
5 'BART GETS AN F' - BART'S BREAKDOWN
Bart's grades have never been much to write home about and in this episode he's threatened with academic purgatory. Bart learns that he will need to repeat fourth grade if he fails his next test. It's motivation enough for Bart to actually put his head down and study, which is a sharp left turn for the character.

The kicker comes when despite actually trying this time, Bart still fails the test. The lesson being that one bout of studying can't make up for a lifetime of not trying. Bart has a breakdown in the classroom which is truly heart wrenching and even the stoic Miss Krabappel has a moment of sympathy.
4 'ONE FISH, TWO FISH, BLOW FISH, BLUE FISH' - HOMER SAYS GOODBYE
Homer is usually carefree and empty-headed, however, in this episode his mortality is brought into question with touching results. After a night at a sushi restaurant, Homer believes he's eaten poisonous pufferfish and is told he only has 24 hours to live, well, 22 hours after being kept waiting by Dr. Hibbert. He attempts to cram in all the things he wanted to do before he died over the course of the next day but realizes too late - he's not had a chance to spend time with his family. One by one he tucks in his kids and says his goodbyes to them before heading downstairs to listen to an audiobook of the Bible and die. Of course, he doesn't die but this is one of The Simpsons' most heart-wrenching entries.
3 'MOTHER SIMPSON' - HOMER WATCHES THE STARS
Homer can barely remember his mother, having been abandoned at an early age, until one day she turns up in Springfield and he discovers she is a fugitive and has been on the run. Homer and his mother are able to spend time together and discover the things they have in common and begin to heal the wounds of their estranged past. However, the time comes for Homer's mother to leave again. In this episode, Homer is dealing with feelings of abandonment and despite learning that his mother is proud of him he is left grappling with the loss of his mother yet again. The episode concludes with Homer watching the stars. It's an unusually quiet and contemplative moment for Homer and the show.
2 'AND MAGGIE MAKES THREE' - 'DO IT FOR HER'
Perhaps the most enduringly heartbreaking episode of The Simpsons, 'And Maggie Makes Three' addresses the lack of photos of Maggie in the house. We learn that before Maggie was born Homer quit his job at the nuclear power plant and landed his dream job of working at a bowling alley.

Unfortunately, the new baby meant he had to return to a more lucrative position and when he was hired back at the plant, Mr. Burns put up a 'de-motivational' plaque to remind Homer: 'Don't Forget You're Here Forever.' In heartwarming fashion Homer has used all photos of Maggie to cover up the text of the plaque, changing the message to: 'Do It For Her.'
1 'FOUR REGRETTING & A FUNERAL' - BART'S BLACKBOARD MESSAGE
Not so much a story point rather a nod to the passing of Miss. Krabappel voice actor Marcia Wallace, one of the most heartbreaking moments from The Simpsons was the message Bart was writing on the blackboard, in the first episode recorded without his adversary and fourth-grade teacher. Instead of a joke line, covering the board, Bart has simply written: 'We'll really miss you Mrs. K.'

Straight-A student at Springfield Middle excels in STEM academics, dance and extracurriculars
WILLIAMSPORT — Rachael Gross said her dream to be a professional dancer is a long shot. If that doesn't work out, she'll fall back on her STEM background, possibly as a physical therapist or mental-health therapist.
Rachael is 13 and an eighth-grader at Springfield Middle School, where she's in the magnet program for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). She hopes to be in the International Baccalaureate program at North Hagerstown High School in the fall.
A straight-A student her entire school career, Rachael has been in the magnet program since second grade at Williamsport Elementary School.
This school year, Rachael, whose favorite class tends to be math, is taking two high school courses through the magnet program: Geometry and Introduction to Engineering Design.
"I push myself a lot. I feel like sometimes things come naturally to me, but I have to understand what we're learning," Rachael said.
She said one of her strengths is handling a lot of commitments, which serves her well.
Also active in extracurricular activities at school, Rachael works on the school yearbook, is a member of the Student Government Association and plays violin in the school's orchestra.
Rachael started dancing when she was 3 or 4 and she now dances nearly every day at The City Ballet School, where she studies ballet, pointe, tap, jazz and modern. She has participated in The Nutcracker production for eight years.
Before she committed to a full dance schedule, Rachael played soccer and ran in her school's cross-country races.

Last Day
It’s our last day at St. Paul’s School in Barcelona, Spain. This was such a short placement but I am beyond grateful to have been given the chance to learn and grow professionally from an international school.
Looking back at my placement I can think of many differences among the educational systems in Spain and the States, with the biggest difference being the breaks in school. The school day begins sat 8:45 AM, just a little bit later than schools in the US. Class periods are no longer than an hour long, with a 30-minute break after the first two periods, an 1.5-hour break for lunchtime, and the school day ending at 4:30 PM. I don't know if this is correlated with the breaks they receive, but the children seem to be very focused in class and ready to learn during the school day.
There is also a class period once a week called “Self-Directed Learning”, or SDL, which is a 12-week project in which students pick a topic of their choice to research, learn, or create. There is also a major focus on learning a second language. Not only are students taking a Catalan, the original language of Barcelona, and Spanish, every other class the students attend during the day are in English. The students begin learning English as early as 1st grade, and are given an oral exam upon entry into high school. I wish that the States put more of an emphasis on learning a second language, maybe even making it a required course in elementary school.
Even with the differences among the two educational systems, the key of being an extraordinary teacher is still the same; creating lasting relationships with your students. I think this is key to being a great teacher and making a difference in your students lives’. My cooperating teacher in Barcelona, Richard, has done an amazing job with this, and I am very thankful to have learned from him. Even with how great Richard is, I also learned so much about creating positive relationships from my cooperating teachers in the States. I am very fortunate to have learned from all three teachers this semester, and I am very excited to take what I have learned into my classroom at Springfield Middle School in January.

If you have a teacher’s license and a college degree in the subject and grade level you want to teach, you are well on your way. There is, in fact, a teachers’ shortage in some areas of the country, but most of these shortages are in special education, STEM and ELL. That doesn’t mean you are doomed if you want to teach elementary school, or high school English or history. You will just have to work harder to find these positions, and you will have to be more patient with the process.
I was a high school English teacher for 19 years, but I started as a special education teacher, because I couldn’t find a job teaching English right out of college. So, if you had your heart set on working in the Boston area, but you can only find a job in Worcester or Springfield, take the Springfield job. If you had your heart set on teaching high school, but you get an offer to teach sixth grade, take what you can get. If you, see a lot of ESL jobs, and you have that license, apply, even if you really want to teach English or history.
You will end up teaching the grade level and subject you prefer soon enough, but take what you can get now.
How did I get my first teaching job?
My brother-in-law was the principal of a school. I tell you this because networking is the key to getting your first job, your second job and all your jobs. Rarely do people get positions by applying for jobs blind. They almost always know someone on the inside, they are almost always connected. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply for jobs where you know no one. It just means that you should try to get connected or realize the connections you already have.
How do you get connected?
Well, start with your professors from college. They will help you meet people who might hire you. I got the job I have right now because my professor recommended me for it.
Now, I am a professor, and in the five — only five years — I have been here, I have directly helped at least a dozen students find positions to for which to apply. Now, they have teaching positions at those schools.
Also, network with family and friends. Tell them you are looking for a teaching job in science or math or whatever it is, and tell your neighbors too. If you feel shy, if you are introverted and don’t want to stop your neighbor as he is walking his dog by your house, even though you heard he is on the school committee in town, remember this: The worst thing he can do is say no. And, if you don’t like hearing that word, that’s ok. Do it anyway. Just know, that when you hear YES, the no’s you suffered through will have been worth it.

This is how my wife got her teaching job, and she has been at that school now for two decades. These Career Fairs are advertised in local newspapers, on monster.com, in LinkedIn and on the websites of school districts under their link employment. Most interviewers expect you to dress a little bit more conservatively than you would for the job which you are applying.
Interviewing.
1. The day before the interview, drive to that school to see how long it takes you to get there. Do it at the time when your interview is, if you can. Also, do some research about the school and even the person who is scheduled to interview you. That doesn’t mean you should say anything abut the school during the interview. But, you should know the publicly available information and news about the school, so you can be ready in case they expect you to know.
2. Make sure you have an inflated spare tire n your trunk. Fill the fuel tank the day before. Missing an interview that could turn into an offer is tragic. Don’t let a flat spare stop you.
3. Shower. There are some things you do not have control over, like whether or not the chair of the school committee has a son who wants the same job you want. But, you there are some things like getting a haircut, showering, and making sure you don’t have a flat spare that you DO have control over. Always do what your can. So, no perfume, but yet, do, shave and get a good night’s sleep. Smile and have a firm handshake.
4. Eat a healthy breakfast or lunch but no onions. You don’t ant low blood sugar or need to belch or use the restroom when you are in the interview. Seems obvious, right? I guess most of these things are. But, then again, why do so many people arrive late to their interviews.
5. Arrive 15 minutes early to any interview. This requires planning and prioritizing. If you get there 30 minutes early, sit in your car for 15 minutes. Being too early can hurt your chances.
6. Smile. Did I say smile? Make sure you smile and not just for the person interviewing you. Smile for the secretaries, the janitors and the security guards.
7. Look the people in the eye.
8. Bring your resume, some teaching materials like lesson plans or lesson plan ideas with you.
9. Be ready to write. Sometimes candidates have to write during the interview.
10. Be ready to teach a demo lesson during the interview.
11. Turn off your device. If you forget to do this, and your phone buzzes, do NOT look at it. In that circumstance, the only reason you would take it out is to turn it off — and do so without looking at it.
17. Say Thank you for your time, when the interview is over.

It’s ok to be excited, but it’s also ok to ask them for some time to think about it. If they ask you how much time you need, ask them if you can have a few days, especially if you may have other opportunities, like interviews coming up. Definitely ask for some time to think about it if you have another offer.
If you don’t get an offer.
Don’t take it personally. There are many reasons why you might not get an offer. Maybe the person who did get the offer is the son of a school committee member. Maybe you were not a good fit. Maybe they wanted someone younger or older. Many of these things are beyond your control. And, it’s possible that a school that did not make you an offer in June, because they filled the position may offer you a different position in July because a person announced his or her retirement, and you were #2 among the candidates. Or. In August, the person who was #1, gets a better offer and walks away from it. The principal might very well call you and make the offer, so when you are rejected, make sure you thank the person who interviewed you for his or her time.
You are always networking.
The secretaries, janitors and security guards in schools are obviously people who you should be polite and gracious too because you want to be nice, right? But, you are also selfish WHICH IS ok. Instead of selfish, let’s call this trait “hungry” or ambitious. Now, imagine, you are in line at the grocery store, and you sigh deeply at how slow the cashier is. The person standing behind you hears you sigh and you start to complain about that cashier. Then, a week later, you go to an interview for a teaching job. And, the principal who is interviewing you is that person standing in line behind you. Now, you are wondering if you made a bad impression, and your just wondering will affect your ability to make a good impression in that moment. Think about it this way, everyone you meet could be your next boss.
Who knows who?
You never know which one of your relatives or neighbors works at a school, so at every opportunity you can, tell people you meet that you are looking for a teaching job. If a neighbor tells you that she knows the principal of the local school, ask her if she would introduce you to that principal. If that neighbor is a close friend of your mother or borrows your dad’s tools all the time or parks his boat in your yard, give that person a stack of your CVs, just to have.

If you are willing to do the things above, if you are willing to travel a little, to compromise and to treat your job search like a job, you will get an offer. I teach people who want to become teachers, and then they graduate. Most of them get jobs teaching in schools. But, those who get the best jobs and get them the fastest are willing to travel, willing to put themselves out there and willing to apply to a bunch of schools every day.
